Upgrading a Fender Precision Bass: Modifications and Enhancements

In a recent video, a viewer sent a Fender Precision Bass (P Bass) to a popular YouTube channel for a review. The viewer generously offered free rein to modify the instrument before returning it. This exciting opportunity allowed for an in-depth exploration of potential enhancements and upgrades to the classic P Bass design.

In this video by Phillip McKnight, we'll delve into his work, summarizing the key points and discussing the modifications made to the instrument.

The video starts with an unboxing of the Fender Precision Bass, highlighting its Mexican origin and attractive features such as a maple neck with a satin finish. Phillip discusses the simplicity of the P Bass design, which includes a single pickup, volume and tone controls, and a basic bridge. The instrument's build quality is praised, with emphasis on the smooth neck finish and well-constructed frets.

Phillip demonstrates the bass's sound, playing a variety of notes and showcasing its sustain. The tone control is adjusted to achieve a darker, deeper sound that is preferred by many players. The bass's playability and sustain are examined, with a desire expressed for slightly lower action and fuller sustain.

After evaluating the instrument's condition and performance, he proceeds to make modifications to enhance the P Bass further. The modifications include:

  • replacing the pickups with DiMarzio 60s P pickups,
  • upgrading the bridge to a Ray Ross Bridge, and
  • changing the output jack to a Pure Tone Jack.
  • Additionally, conductive shielding paint is applied to improve the instrument's overall shielding.

In the final stages, the video showcases the installation of the new components, including the pickups, output jack, and knobs. Phillip also demonstrates how to restring the bass using the rear-loading feature and adjusts the bridge height accordingly.

The chosen modifications demonstrate a commitment to improving both the sound and playability of the instrument. Upgrading the pickups to DiMarzio 60s P pickups offers a refined and versatile tone, while the Ray Ross Bridge and Pure Tone Jack enhance sustain and durability. The application of shielding paint and the use of high-quality components showcase the host's commitment to improving the instrument's performance.

The Fender Precision Bass, with its timeless design and potential for upgrades, remains a go-to choice for musicians seeking a versatile and reliable instrument.
